Professor Paul Mitrofanoff

Professor Paul Mitrofanoff

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Professor Paul Mitrofanoff on November 30, 2025, at the age of 90.

Professor Mitrofanoff was an extraordinary surgeon, a devoted teacher, and a compassionate advocate for patients. Through his pioneering work in continent urinary diversion, the “Mitrofanoff principle” restored dignity and independence to countless children and adults with complex urological conditions.

As a mentor, he combined uncompromising standards with genuine kindness, inspiring generations of paediatric surgeons and urologists to strive for excellence and humane care. Colleagues and trainees remember his sharp intellect, unflagging curiosity, and generosity in sharing knowledge; patients remember the hope and quality of life he helped restore.

His leadership as Head of the Department of Paediatric Surgery at the University Hospital of Rouen (France), along with his appointment as Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur in 2002, reflect the international significance of his contributions.

As an organization committed to promoting high standards of care, education, research, and international cooperation in paediatric surgery and paediatric urology — values at the heart of the PSOnS mission — we wish to honour his memory and pay tribute to his professional and human legacy.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and to all the communities he served with dedication and generosity.
